In the book, there is an earthquake; and many people die. Sarah is really shocked about the fact that too these people the earthquake really isn't that big of a deal. The people in India are used to people dying because of poverty,earthquakes and other reasons. But Sarah is so shocked because this isn't something that she is used to. She walks around surprised. Just like in the Motorcycle diaries, these shocking experiences can change someone's perception and make there experience not as much of a good experience as they were hoping.
